New implant technology combines bioactivity and bone-matched mechanics to support faster, more reliable spinal fusion and patient recovery
Syensqo’s Zeniva® PEEK biomaterial is enabling Shanghai REACH Medical Instrument Ltd., a leader in orthopedic implant innovation, to launch a first-of-its-kind spinal fusion cage incorporating calcium silicate, designed to enhance bone integration and improve patient recovery. The device, indicated for cervical to lumbar procedures (C2–S1), combines bone-matched mechanical properties with bioactive functionality.
The new fusion cage addresses longstanding challenges in spinal surgery. Traditional titanium alloy cages, while strong, have a high elastic modulus that can cause stress shielding and bone resorption. Implant-grade PEEK, such as Syensqo’s Zeniva® PEEK, offers radiolucency and bone-relevant mechanical behavior; however, unmodified PEEK surfaces are relatively bioinert and may show limited bone ongrowth without added surface or compositional features. By incorporating a calcium-silicate bioactive phase into a PEEK matrix, the device aims to pair bone-relevant mechanics with enhanced bioactivity. In preclinical studies, calcium-silicate systems can release soluble silicon-containing species associated with osteogenic signaling, supporting bone formation and fusion biology.
This innovation highlights how advanced biomaterials can actively contribute to better clinical outcomes. With Zeniva® PEEK, we aim to support device manufacturers in developing safer, more effective solutions for patients.
Shanghai REACH has developed the world’s only spinal fusion cage using the proprietary Calcium Silicate-Compounded PEEK biomaterial. Through compounding and precision injection molding, we have achieved a breakthrough balance of mechanical performance and bone integration. We greatly appreciate Syensqo’s expertise in materials science—the unique properties of Syensqo PEEK and their professionalism in implantable devices have been instrumental in this innovation.
Early clinical data from 78 cases, with ongoing follow-up, indicate improved osteogenesis and fusion outcomes compared to standard PEEK cages. The device is designed to support shorter fusion time, reduced postoperative pain and dysfunction, and lowered revision risk for patients. The device has obtained NMPA registration and is now available to healthcare institutions performing spinal fusion surgeries.
Looking ahead, Syensqo and Shanghai REACH Medical Instrument will continue to collaborate on advanced biomaterial solutions, supporting the evolution of orthopedic care and improving patient outcomes worldwide.
