Syensqo achieves CDP’s leadership tier, recognized among the top companies worldwide for transparency and climate action
Syensqo is proud to announce that it has achieved a prestigious Leadership level with an A- rating for Climate Change in the 2024 CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project) assessment, a rating achieved by only around the top 5% of companies scored by CDP worldwide. CDP is a global non-profit organization recognized as the world’s leading environmental benchmarking platform, scoring companies on their transparency and performance related to climate change, water risks, and deforestation.
In addition to its strong climate score, Syensqo received an A rating for its Supplier Engagement Assessment (SEA), earning a place on CDP’s “SEA A List”. Syensqo also earned a B rating for water stewardship, reflecting robust management practices and its ongoing commitment to responsible water use.
Sustainability is central to our strategy, aligned with the needs of our customers and Syensqo’s long-term growth ambitions. To receive this recognition from CDP in our first year as an independent company is a tremendous achievement and positions us as a sustainability leader in our sector. It is also testament to the dedication of our teams across our global footprint and the strong collaboration with our suppliers and partners to make a positive impact across our value chain.
Syensqo’s climate action is guided by its One Planet roadmap, with a goal of carbon neutral operations (scope 1 and 2) by 20401. As of 2024, Syensqo has already achieved 50% of its 2030 greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets, which cover scopes 1, 2 and 3 and have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), through permanent, structural changes.
By 2030, Syensqo aims to reduce scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions from its own operations by 42% compared to a 2021 baseline. Today, three out of every four Syensqo sites are powered by renewable electricity, including all sites in the US and China. For scope 3 emissions, Syensqo targets a 25% reduction by 2030 in Focus 5 categories2 of its value chain, compared to a 2021 baseline. To achieve this, the group is collaborating closely with suppliers and customers, particularly through its Supplier Climate Pledge, which covers 80% of Syensqo GHG emissions linked to raw material sourcing.
Syensqo’s B rating for water stewardship reflects its ongoing commitment to responsible water management. In September 2024, Syensqo took further action on water stewardship, with a new target to reduce freshwater withdrawal by 20% by 2030, compared to 2021, at sites facing water scarcity challenges, even as the business continues to grow.
1 Carbon neutrality goal by 2040 combines ambition to reduce scope 1 and 2 emissions by at least 80% from the 2021 baseline and to compensate residual emissions with high-integrity carbon credits in line with the recommendations of the United Nations' High Level Expert Group on the Net Zero Emissions Commitments of Non-state entities.
2 Focus 5 categories of scope 3 GHG emissions include (1) purchased goods and services and (2) fuel-and energy-related activities [both upstream] as well as (3) processing, (4) use and (5) end-of-life treatment of sold products downstream.
