Syensqo’s Renewable Materials and Biotechnology platform aims to contribute to efforts to reduce the world’s dependence on fossil fuels through its involvement with the  Initiative

Syensqo, a science company focused on developing clean and renewable solutions that support the sustainability ambitions of its customers, has joined the Renewable Carbon Initiative, through its Renewable Materials and Biotechnology Growth Platform.

This partnership marks an important step in Syensqo’s sustainability journey, as it will accelerate progress on the company’s Climate and Nature commitments. Believing in the power of collaboration to make a difference, Syensqo aims to contribute experience, knowledge and network to the Renewable Carbon Initiative.

“Joining the RCI as an active member proves Syensqo’s commitment toward promoting renewable carbon as a lever to improve sustainability.”

Thomas Canova, Head of Syensqo’s Renewable Materials and Biotechnology growth platform

"The RCI is envisioning the biggest transformation of the chemical and material industry since the industrial revolution – to decouple the petrochemical industry from fossil carbon, by using renewable carbon. And going forward, we are happy to work towards this vision with Syensqo – a multinational specialty company  that is taking significant steps to transform their business towards sustainability and that is fully aligned with the concept of renewable carbon.“

Christopher vom Berg, Executive Manager of the RCI

Syensqo’s Renewable Materials and Biotechnology platform, launched in 2022,  focuses on developing innovative and sustainable solutions using renewable feedstocks and biotechnology. It aims to meet growing demand for sustainable solutions by increasing the share of sustainable renewable carbon in Syensqo's product offering and developing new business opportunities enabled by biotechnology. The platform's ambition relies on a holistic innovation approach with three interconnected pillars: sustainable renewable carbon, biotechnology and end-of-life management.

Syensqo is a science company developing groundbreaking solutions that enhance the way we live, work, travel and play. Inspired by the scientific councils which Ernest Solvay initiated in 1911, we bring great minds together to push the limits of science and innovation for the benefit of our customers, with a diverse, global team of more than 13,000 associates in 30 countries.

Our solutions contribute to safer, cleaner, and more sustainable products found in homes, food and consumer goods, planes, cars, batteries, smart devices and health care applications. Our innovation power enables us to deliver on the ambition of a circular economy and explore breakthrough technologies that advance humanity.

The aim of the Renewable Carbon Initiative (RCI) is to support and speed up the transition from fossil carbon to renewable carbon for all organic chemicals and materials.

RCI addresses the core problem of climate change, which is extracting and using additional fossil carbon from the ground that will eventually end up in the atmosphere. Companies are encouraged to focus on phasing out fossil resources and to use renewable carbon instead.

The initiative wants to drive this message, initiating further actions by bringing stakeholders together, providing information and shaping policy to strive for a climate-neutral circular economy.

Fossil carbon shall be completely substituted by renewable carbon, which is carbon from alternative sources: biomass, CO2 and recycling.
