Polymers for Nonwovens used in N95, FFP2, FFP3, and Surgical Masks
With supply chains stretched, alternative materials are needed to replace meltblown polypropylene typically used for N95, FFP2, FFP3, and surgical masks. Syensqo’s solutions include Solef® PVDF, which can be electrospun into fibers for non-woven membranes, and Algoflon® PTFE, which can be used to make expanded PTFE (ePTFE) membranes. Syensqo has an established industry network of filtration membrane and mask manufacturers and we can assist with regulatory support for emergency FDA approvals.
Solef® PVDF
Solef® PVDF is currently being used for filtration media in N95, FFP2, and FFP3 masks and we are working with partners in the supply chain to quickly scale up production to help meet frontline needs. This material features:
- Exceptional material characteristics that allow for excellent microfiltration, air permeability and breathability
- Compatibility with steam autoclave and hydrogen peroxide sterilization methods
- Very high purity levels
Algoflon® PTFE
PTFE is currently being used to make expanded PTFE (ePTFE) for N95, FFP2 and surgical masks. We are working with partners in the supply chain to make Algoflon® PTFE more readily available for this purpose.
- Unique material characteristics allow for breathable, microporous membrane structures.
- Compatibility with steam autoclave and hydrogen peroxide sterilization methods
- Inherently hydrophobic which is important for N95 filtration
Our experts have many years of experience supporting filtration device producers and we are committed to helping with emergency COVID-19 activities.
